El tema de la memoria de la Guerra Civil ha sido objeto en España, en la última década, de un encendido debate público. Opiniones en artículos periodísticos y en revistas académicas, libros, movimientos de recuperación de la memoria, debates parlamentarios, polémicas entre historiadores y otros especialistas, investigaciones patrocinadas por gobiernos autonómicos, además de la llamada Ley de la Memoria Histórica (2007), han llevado al terreno público un tema que parecía estar recluido en el ámbito cultural (esto es, en el cine, la literatura y entre los investigadores) al igual que otros tantos temas históricos. Por si este dato fuese poco relevante, el citado debate se ha encadenado a un segundo, como es el relacionado con las lecturas políticas y memoriales de la Transición democrática. El resultado, en términos académicos, ha sido un tema de “historia del presente” que refleja como nunca el significado de esta última expresión: dominio de investigación de la historia reciente fuertemente sometido al escrutinio público.

Las circunstancias que rodean al presente proyecto “La memoria de la Guerra Civil española durante la transición a la democracia” surgen de la citada situación. Se trata de un proyecto de I+D+i concedido en la convocatoria de 2011 de Proyectos de investigación fundamental no orientada, para los años 2012-1014, por el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación del gobierno de España (MICINN); hoy bajo la competencia del Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, MINECO). Los investigadores que tomamos parte en él, procedentes de diversas áreas científicas de las universidades de Zaragoza y Extremadura, partíamos de interpretaciones sobre la Transición y la memoria de la guerra civil que resultaban diferentes e incluso, en algunos casos, contradictorias. Sin embargo, nos unía un propósito común: llevar el citado tema al ámbito científico, conducirlo más allá del mero recuerdo u opinión, y transformarlo en objeto de investigación desplegando todas las herramientas teóricas y metodológicas posibles. Nuestros únicos límites eran los propios de un equipo de trabajo que descubre nuevos temas o posibilidades conforme investiga, pero que debe tratarlos lateralmente o aplazarlos para nuevas etapas. La presente página web tiene como objeto el mantener una plataforma, para investigadores y curiosos, que permita difundir fácilmente información sobre el tema, resultados de investigación y visualizar las circunstancias que los han rodeado.

The topic of the memory of the Civil War has concentrated in Spain, during the last decade, a heating public debate. A wide range of articles in newspapers, essays in academic journals, books, movements for the recovery of historical memory, parliamentary debates, controversies between historians and other specialists, and research promoted by regional governments, in addition to the enactment of the so-called Law for Historical Memory (2007), have led to public arena a topic that seemed to be limited to cultural field (movies, literature and researchers). If this fact was not relevant enough, the aforementioned debate has become entangled to another one, as that of politics and memory of the democratic Transition. The result, in academic terms, has been a topic of the “history of the present” which is reflecting as never the very meaning of this expression: a field of research relating to recent history strongly subject to public examination.

The circumstances surrounding the project “The memory of the Spanish Civil War over the transition to democracy” stem from this situation. This is a Project of Research plus Development plus innovation granted in the 2011 Call for Aid for Basic non-specific Research Projects, over the years 2012-2014 (Ministry of Science and Innovation, of the Spanish Government, MICINN; today under responsibility of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, MINECO). The researchers, who take part in it, coming from several scientific areas of the Universities of Zaragoza and Extremadura, started from interpretations of the Transition and the memory of the Civil War which proved to be different, an even, in some cases, contradictory. Nevertheless, there was a common purpose to join together: leading the aforementioned topic beyond simple remembrance or opinion, by guiding it to a scientific field where it becomes an object of research with the best theoretical and methodological guaranties – its only limits being those of a team who discovers new topics and possibilities as it is researching, but needs to put them off for new stages. The present website has as purpose to hold a platform, for researchers and interested people, to easily spread information on the topic, the results of research and its surrounding circumstances.
